Party like it's 1999

Smell is such a memory trigger. Today I used part of my mother's day gift card to Avant Salon and Spa and had a facial. I was a regular at Avant back in my high-tech days -- back when John and I were DINKS -- dual income with no kids (and before I gave up 2/3 of my income to became a teacher / grad school student). I haven't been there in, oh, eight years, I guess. Just walking into that unique Aveda smell brought back memories of those indulgent days. Dinners in nice restaurants. Happy hours. Expensive wine. And suits and shoes. Haircuts and highlights and facials.

And I missed them.

Maybe I'm not the frugal, crunchy mom I thought I was.

I think it's healthy that we don't ever lose our appreciation for those things. It means that our selves aren't altered by motherhood, it's just that things have rotated a little for the season you're in now.

Like, in the winter, it wouldn't be true to myself deny that I love gardening, and bike riding and cook outs and going to the pool. But, winter isn't the time for that, so it would be pathological to yearn for it when it's contradictory to the season I'm living in. I can get my fix by planning little getaways to places with warm weather, to keep sane and remind me that I do love summer. But, there's a lot to enjoy in the winter, too. You just can't have it all at the same time.

That spa treatment was your weekend getaway to Cancun in the middle of January. It's just a taste of what your retirement will be.

ha!! I had a $10 off coupon for there this week and treated myself to an eyebrow wax. Pretty sad when you look forward to pain just because it is at our old salon...

Of course I topped that with a super cheap (but fabulous haircut) and a great new find of a cheap (but clean) pedicure/manicure place.

All in one week and I actually feel like a woman not just mom, housekeeper, chef, dog keeper.......you get the idea!

Somehow when we were DINKS we still had to pinch penies. I don't think we did it right.

Oh, Rita, that is beautiful!! You are absolutely right.

Carlye, we were DINKS for TEN YEARS! You just didn't do it long enough. :-)

I still splurge and get my eyebrows done at Avant every 2 weeks. I had to give up the haircuts or anything else that costs more than $20, though!

SO MANY JOYS, like all good titles, has multiple meanings. My life is filled with joy. Motherhood is filled with joy. And my family is filled with Joyces! My grandmothers, born Joyce B. and Joyce Fay, began the naming tradition. My mother, Velda Joyce, carried it on and passed it on to me, Amanda Joyce. Our fourth generation of Joyces includes my daughter Caroline Joyce and my nieces Megan Joyce and Sophia Joyce.
